With headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, Amref Health Africa is the largest Africa-based healthcare nonprofit, serving millions of people every year across 35 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Amref Health Africa in the USA is the US office of Amref Health Africa. Its primary responsibilities are to raise awareness and funds to support Amref Health Africa's work. We currently have a staff of eight and an annual budget of more than $24 million.

Internship Description

The Business Development Intern is part of the organization’s Business Development Unit, responsible for securing funding from American foundations, corporations, and the US Government. The Business Development Intern will work part-time to support senior members of the team to build Amref USA’s donor and partner base, largely through desk-based prospect research and tracking opportunities to submit proposals and concept notes. This position offers an excellent opportunity for an energetic and motivated student to gain experience across institutional fundraising and partnerships, work with talented colleagues across the African continent, and build understanding of the global health ecosystem and programs. Additionally, the Business Development Intern will gain exposure to how the small, but nimble Amref USA teams operate and build universally applicable skills in research, writing/editing, knowledge management, operations, and stakeholder engagement. The Business Development Intern will:

  • Help build a pipeline of corporate and foundation donors through desk research to identify potential new donors and partners
  • Identify and track upcoming opportunities to submit proposals/concept notes to potential donors
  • Make recommendations to Business Development team members on the best opportunities based on this research and be involved as we pursue them
  • Support writing and editing of proposals, concept notes, reports, and other materials used in the prospecting process
  • Support information management processes using Raiser’s Edge and Microsoft Excel
  • Special projects to support other Amref USA units (such as Individual Fundraising or Communications) and/or African Country Offices (country-based Business Development teams)
  • Contribute to proposal development including writing and editing proposals
  • Conduct health policy research
  • Write program reports to foundations
  • Conduct special projects as assigned

Internship Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following experience:

  • Experience conducting research.
  • Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills.
  • Interest in global health and/or international development issues and programs, particularly in an African context.
  • Previous internship experience and/or knowledge of global health nonprofits is a plus.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Good communication skills and a ‘can-do’ attitude.
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
