Organization Description

Ascend is a network of K-12 public charter schools serving 4,800 students in 12 schools across Brooklyn—New York’s most populous borough. Our mission is to lead our students on a great intellectual adventure, provide them with an exceptional college preparatory education, and place them firmly on the path to success in college and beyond.

By hosting a Princeton intern, we will be able to harness his/her vast talent in service towards fulfilling our mission and combat educational inequity in Brooklyn. This will be a formative experience for that student as s/he will learn about how to lead a career of impact. Princeton’s unique emphasis on civic service makes Princeton students excellent candidates for an internship at Ascend Learning.  Previous PICS interns have made significant contributions to Ascend - some examples include math curriculum materials that are used during the school year and data analyses that inform those curricular decisions. Ascend benefits greatly from the work that mission-aligned interns bring to our organization.

Internship Description
As an Ascend intern, s/he will have the opportunity to learn from highly dedicated, experienced professionals who are committed to urban education and our ultimate goal of paving a clear path to college for the children of Central Brooklyn. This is a full-time, paid internship opportunity. There are internship positions available in the following teams: curriculum, talent, schools, operations, technology, and finance. In addition to having a personal project, s/he will work on day-to-day tasks and operations to support the broader mission of Ascend and may have the chance to tutor students directly.

    Evaluation Excerpt

I think Ascend does a good job trying to reach low-income minority communities through education, and by extension, my contributions to the organization helped towards that goal in some way. I was also able to teach Math to some of these low-income minority students in summer school, so I definitely felt that I had some impact in contributing to positive social change. It was also an educationally enriching experience, as I was able to gain good exposure to what it’s like to work at a charter school network in New York City. I also gained some professional development and some understanding of office dynamics.
    — James Sung '19

The mission of the organization was something I was interested about prior to the internship and my passion for it grew and developed significantly during my time with Ascend. I have learned a lot about the work that I truly enjoy doing and what I want to do in the future as a result of this internship.
