Boston Health Care for the Homeless (BHCHP)

The mission of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) is to ensure unconditionally equitable and dignified access to the highest quality health care for all individuals and families experiencing homelessness in our community. BHCHP's integrated and multidisciplinary Street Team combs the city’s streets day and night to find rough sleepers wherever they are. Twice a week a doctor from the team accompanies Pine Street Inn’s Overnight Van, and several days each week the team walks the streets of the city, seeking out the men and women who live in alleys and under bridges to offer both urgent and continuous medical and behavioral health care to these individuals whose struggle to survive each day makes access to our shelter and hospital clinics difficult.

Housing Information

We advise exploring sublets in neighborhoods such as Allston/Brighton, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain and Brookline. It might also be worthwhile to contact housing departments at colleges such as Simmons, Emanuel, Northeastern, etc., to see if any of their students are looking to fill a sublet over the summer.

Internship Qualifications

More so than skills, we look for certain personality traits. We look for students that display maturity, humility and a comfort level with patients especially. We value a sense of curiosity and initiative. We also like it when a student doesn't just tell us they have a passion for the work ... they can show us why they have that passion. Because this is a multidisciplinary team, students that can explain what team work means to them and why it is important to them are preferred.
