Internship Description

The Community Partnerships and Development Internship will consist of working to broaden By The Hand’s service to children and families through supporting the fundraising, community engagement, research and program development of key community projects including:

  • Austin Harvest, a youth-led fresh produce market in the Austin Neighborhood.
  • The North Austin Community Center, a 150,000 sq ft facility for sports, education and wellness developed in partnership with the Chicago Fire Soccer team and Jason Heyward from the Chicago Cubs.
  • Investigating opportunities for additional mission expansion in the Englewood and Altgeld Gardens neighborhoods
  • Supporting the development of housing and early childhood strategies in the Austin neighborhood

The position will expose students to community development, community engagement, policy and organizing, K-12th education with a focus on out-of-school time, fundraising and grant writing, as well as translating research and best practice to tangible strategies. Individuals will complete meaningful work during their internship and partner directly with the Managing Director of Partnerships and Development on large projects. Prior interns have completed State Grants – earning $1.5 million in funds, planned successful events with dignitaries, presented best practice research to the leadership team, attended community events, and have lead enrichment activities with students. Interns can tailor their experience based on interest and skills to get the most from the experience.

Please note: The location of the internship is flexible. In the past, we have done a combination of in-person and remote. We are always willing to work with students on the arrangement that would work best for them.

Housing Information

Being in such a large city, there are lots of housing opportunities such as extended Airbnb, or connecting with other students looking for roommates through social media. Interns are not required to be on-site daily and could do a hybrid remote and in person position.

Internship Qualifications

The ideal candidate have:

  • passionate about the intersection of education and community development
  • have excellent written and verbal skills
  • work well across lines of difference
  • effectively self-start, time-manage
  • excel in a hybrid schedule of remote and in-person work.

Additional or preferred qualifications:

  • Spanish-speaking is a plus, but not required.
