By 2025, KIPP DC will build upon two decades of proven results to develop into a more impactful, innovative, and inclusive school system, that provides joyful, identity-affirming learning experiences so that all students and alumni achieve extraordinary outcomes. We are a network of eighteen schools educating 6,800 students and employing 1,200 teachers, leaders, and staff members dedicated to this mission.
We are looking for highly motivated interns to join the KIPP DC headquarters team for the summer of 2021. These outstanding individuals will support a team in the KIPP DC headquarters office over the course of approximately eight to ten weeks, running from June through August. Specific timing is flexible based on team assignment and individual time constraints. In addition to working on a specific project or set of projects within a functional team, interns will have the opportunity to engage with one another and senior staff through meetings, informational interviews, workshops, and events. KIPP DC Headquarters Interns will report to a member of their assigned team as well as the internship coordinators.
KIPP DC has historically hosted 8-10 interns each summer for both undergraduate and graduate students. Interns have helped our headquarters' teams immensely in the planning and preparation for the upcoming school year. Many of our interns are interested in becoming teachers or working in the education space after graduation and the program allows interns to learn more about what working at KIPP DC could look like.
Interns will be placed on a specific team within the KIPP DC headquarters office and will work on a project or set of projects in addition to providing general support to their team and to KIPP DC through administrative and organizational tasks. Teams that have historically hosted interns are listed below. In your cover letter, please note which team(s) you are interested in.
● Academic (create and organize instructional resources that support teachers and school leaders)
● Data & Student Information (assist in setting up KIPP DC’s student data system for the new school year)
● Family & Community Engagement (connect students, families, and community members to KIPP DC)
● Finance (support oversight of revenue and spending as well as long-term financial planning)
● Operations (provide operational support for all KIPP DC campuses in a wide variety of capacities)
● Talent (assist in projects related to cultivation and New Hire Orientation)
● Human Resources (support management of benefits, payroll, and other human resources functions)
● Knowledge & Learning (support summer programming and professional development)
In addition to working on a specific project or set of projects within a functional team, interns will have the opportunity to engage with one another and senior staff through weekly meetings, informational interviews, workshops, and events to learn more about the organization, our position in the larger charter school space, as well as the opportunity to connect with other teams to learn about their work.

Additional skills can vary by team.
The KIPP DC Headquarters office is very close to George Washington University. Interns in the past have been able to find summer housing through GW. There are multiple Facebook pages that share sublets and leases for the summer. Previous interns have also lived in Virginia or Maryland, which may be more cost effective than living in DC.
There are normally a few volunteer opportunities throughout the summer where interns are asked to help out at a school or a KIPP DC event that may be outside of the 9:00-5:00 schedule. This will vary by team and will be shared with the intern ahead of time.
All KIPP DC employees and interns are required to complete a background check via HireRite which is online and will be sent to interns approximately 2 weeks before the start date.
If an intern will be spending more time in schools, they will need to complete a fingerprinting background check at the Metropolitan Police Department prior to their first week. If an intern requires this type of background check, the intern supervisor will share more information with them once they receive their offer letter.
