The National Children’s Research Centre (NCRC) at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital has been at the heart of paediatric research in Ireland since 1965. We offer a full infrastructure to enable translational research into childhood diseases, and have both laboratory and clinical research facilities. NCRC is recognized nationally and internationally for the quality of research, it’s contribution to advances in paediatric medicine and the driver of the research agenda in paediatrics. The NCRC is supported by the Children’s Medical and Research Foundation through fundraising and philanthropy.
Vision and Mission
Our vision: to be a National Centre for paediatric research and education recognized nationally and internationally for the quality of its research, its contribution to advances in paediatric medicine, and a driver of a research agenda in paediatrics.
Our mission: to investigate the cause, treatment, cure and prevention of children’s diseases and ailments.
An Intern during his/her stay in Dublin will work on a research project entitled “Structure and Molecular Basis of Pulmonary Hypertension in Experimental Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH)”. CDH is a relatively common condition occurring in 1 in 2,000 live births and associated with high morbidity and mortality due to severe pulmonary hypoplasia and persistent pulmonary hypertension. Our work focuses mainly on the structure and molecular aspects of endothelial and smooth muscle cells involved in pulmonary hypertension. The intern will work on laboratory based research in one aspect of this research project. Hopefully after three months, they will be able to have a paper for presentation at a Scientific Meeting. In addition to the laboratory work, the intern may be able to take part in clinical conferences. The intern will also be able to attend the Outpatient Clinic, Ward Rounds and Operation Theatre. Arrangements will also be made for the intern to spend a week at the Children’s Medical & Research Foundation which is responsible for raising funds for research.
Lab experience preferred.

My internship was an incredibly educationally enriching experience for anyone interested in a medical career or translational medical research. I was mentored directly by two pediatric surgeons while being exposed to numerous scientific research in and around the lab. Working directly with two pediatric surgeons allowed me to better understand a medical doctor’s perspective of research and gain better insight into the critically important questions in pediatric surgery [...] Being attached to the largest children’s hospital in Ireland, it was extremely easy to see the results of our work and the children we were working towards helping.
