New York Lawyers for the Public Interest

Since 1976 New York Lawyers for the Public Interest has been a leading civil rights advocate for New Yorkers opposing marginalization on the basis of race, immigration status, disability, poverty, and neighborhood pollution. NYLPI pioneered the practice of community lawyering in the five boroughs of New York City. These communities shape our priorities, and their struggles for justice demand innovative solutions. Our interdisciplinary teams of advocates use every tool available – community organizing, impact litigation and individual representation, policy advocacy, media, pro bono partnerships, and public education – to solve seemingly intractable problems, develop leaders, and build collective power to achieve justice. We strive to create equal access to health care, achieve equality of opportunity and self-determination for people with disabilities, ensure immigrant opportunity, strengthen local nonprofits, and secure environmental justice for communities of color and communities with low incomes. To learn more about NYLPI, visit www.nylpi.org.

Our interns bring significant energy, perspective and substantive contributions to help advance our advocacy campaigns. Examples of our PICS intern’s projects during the summer of 2020 included researching and drafting portions of federal agency testimony on clean air protections, helping investigate environmental and health justice advocacy projects (including interviewing key researchers and reporting the results), and creating and presenting to our staff a guide on best practices for formulating social media postings fully accessible to people with disabilities.

Internship #1 Description

Our PICS intern will work with our core programs in Disability Justice, Environmental Justice and Health Justice – either in one particular program or on projects that span these areas. The internship work is wide-ranging and may include research and writing to advance our community-driven legal advocacy, social media campaign work, supporting coalition meetings and rallies with our partners, devising high-impact policy reports, etc. We are a busy, multidisciplinary team of advocates, and we create flexible internships that accommodate the interests of our interns and help develop their skills and perspective on community-driven campaigns for justice. An internship with NYLPI also provides perspective on potential career paths into public interest lawyering, social work, and crafting policy. We believe in mentorship and in creating professional relationships with our interns that will last beyond our summer collaboration.
